The entire world knows the famous zip fastener that appeared not that long ago – in 1891. It was invented by the engineer – Whitcomb L.Judson. It would be amusing to know that Judson designed the slide fastener thanks to his friend’s stiff back , who couldn’t do up his shoes. Judson came up with a slide fastener that could be opened and closed with one hand. That was a devise constructed out of two chains. On each of the chains there used to be hooks and holes which were coupled by means of a movable metallic slider. At first his invention was in a poor demand. It’s hard to imagine but people that time didn’t know how to use this ingenious fastener. There was a long two paged instruction attached to the zipper. Therewith the production cost was very expensive; it overtopped the cost of a skirt or a pair of shoes.

But Judson was sure that he invented really necessary device. So Judson started the first hook and eye fastener company. At first it proved useful for fastening mail bags. Then zippers started being used for military cloth production. Soon a zipper changed its look: Swedish engineer G. Sundack improved them, made them thinner and enlarged the hook quantity. It was he who designed a modern zipper. And only at the end of the 20es zipper came to popular usage in the clothes production. Over the years zippers have transformed from a useful curiosity to a necessary accessory to clothing and much more.

Today it is hard to imagine that there were times when these useful fasteners didn’t exist. There popularity increased tenfold.
